Holidays 2008

I'm embarrassed to admit that it has been a year since my last newsletter, but with the economy tanking and work scarce I have been spending time getting things done around the house and yard. It's a never ending battle in an almost 100 year-old house, but I am pleased that this year the leaves came down before the snow fell!

On the subject of the economy, mine and yours, I am offering a 10% discount for any new jobs (not previosuly quoted) completed before the end of the year (12.31.08)... so now's the time to get some great design work at a very affordable price! Call for a quote and mention code: mortgage :-) to get your discount!

Want more of a bargain? Prepay your job in full by 12.31.08 and receive an additonal 10% off (For prepay option job does not have to be completed in 2008)! All discounts apply ONLY to Gardiner Design work and do not include outside services, photos, printing etc.

Happy Holidays, Debi
Gardiner Design will be closed November 27-28 & December 25-26.

Antiphishing Landing Page
Antiphishing Landing Page

The Antiphishing Working Group is devoted to eliminating spam and "phishing" on the internet. Phishing is a fake email which looks like it was sent by a bank or credit card company that leads you to a website and prompts you to reply and give personal information to the "phisher". Working with Carnegie Mellon University, the APWG wanted to create a warning page to alert people to the danger of "phishing". Moving forward, when a fake email leading to a fake site is reported, the page is taken down and replaced with this one. It will be translated and used around the globe.
Westford Animal Hospital Website
Westford Animal Hospital Website

Gardiner Design created the former version of this site for the original Veterinarian. When he sold the practice to Michael Marshall, DVM, I was again called on to create a new site using their new name. The site includes a subtle flash animation, and is still being developed, but you can see the homepage by clicking here: Westford Animal Hospital

Keep your "Business Visible" with bizible! I bought this domain name about 4 years ago for a potential client looking for a new company name, and it has never been used. Premier Optical Spring Window

Premier Optical Spring & Winter Windows
The theme for Premier's Spring window above was a "garden" complete with 75 pair of bright green cotton work gloves which gave the look of new grass springing from the thawed ground (March 2008). Below is their new window which I created last week with male and female mannequinn heads as landscapes with holiday figurines, fences and trees.

SOLH Reunion Tee shirt
"Life's a Beach" Reunion Teeshirt
I host a annual reunion for my college "suite" mates in Jamestown RI. Over the years I have passed on my life-long beach glass addiction to my friends, so this year's teeshirt sports a photo I took of several pieces from my collection. The design was laser printed onto white shirts with pale aqua cap sleeves.
Tech-tips .: and Design Terminology Defined

Pantone, CMYK, and RGB Color Systems

There are three main choices when it comes to colors, and all of them have their own place as far as media/medium when it comes to "defining" color.

Pantone color (spot color)
Pantone colors are based on the precise mixture of several standard "base" colors. Pantone color, also called "spot color" is mixed before going onto the printing press and is generally (these days) used for print jobs consisting of three colors or less. Pantone colors are avaialable as solids, and some specialty metallics and flourescents, and is used for offset printing.

CMYK color (process color)
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Like Pantone color, CMYK color is a precentage of each color as defined by an image. In this case there are only 4 colors used and instead of a color being a "solid" it is created with varying sized/spaced dots made up of overlapping colors of the four colors to give the "illusion" of a color. CMYK color is best used for digital printing and offset printing.

RGB color
RGB stands for Red, Green & Blue light which all combine to make white light. A number between 1-255 designates the amount of each RGB color. This color blue is created as: 0 RED / 0 GREEN / 255 BLUE. In order for your computer to understand these numbers they must be translated into 6 digit hexidecimal numbers or triplets. 0 RED / 0 GREEN / 255 BLUE becomes 0000FF. The first pair 00 = Red, The second pair 00 = Green, and FF is the Blue. FF is the hexidecimal equivalent of 255 and 00 is the hexidecimal equivalent of 0. RGB color is used for Television and computer monitors.

Glow

The opposite of a shadow, a glow creates a surrounding highlight of an image or text. A high radiance creates a soft, subtle glow and a low radiance creates a hard, bright glow, such as a neon glow.
